It was really cold so I did a kind of weak sauce fartlek. Basically I would start running fast for a bit and then gradually peter out to a jog. Kept that up for like 4 miles.

College football playoff 5k. The winner got two tickets to the national championship game, essentially a $3000 prize for first place (men +women). So even though it was cold (about 25F) at the start, there was plenty of competition.

I got out really slowly and was in about 50th place at the first turn. Moved up to catch a big pack of women at the mile (5:20), including 2:43 marathoner Lacey Krout. The men's leaders were looooong gone as 8 guys were through the mile in sub 5 and the leaders were probably sub 4:30. First mile was very downhill and thus really fast.

I caught Bridget Lyons (1:13/2:35 elite woman+UGA grad) just after the mile, but she was having none of that and surged. We stayed together for about half a mile until I took the lead going up a slight hill. The only person within striking distance was another woman wearing Clemson gear. I hit the second mile in 11:04, Bridget and I passed the Clemson woman. She was now in 1st place and I was still just some schmuck.

We saw Allie at about mile 2.2 and she cheered for Bridget, prompting her to surge ahead of me again. The last mile of this race manages to be all uphill so the time was slow. Bridget and I went back and forth a little bit before she put on the after burners in the last 400m. She ran 17:23, I'm not really sure what my time was yet, but I was only a couple of seconds behind.

Men's race was won by Rob Mullet (a 2016 olympian from the UK) in 14:40.

Awesome race report. Sounds like Bridget is a tough cookie, surging to take you out of it mentally.

Nice Queen video awhile back, Breakthrough, thanks for putting that little gem in there.

Crazy race. The starting line was 100meters wide like a cross country start. We even started out with a 400meter sprint across a huge field in Piedmont Park (the meadow) narrowing into a short steep hill. After that it was mostly road, winding through the park with bike marshalls yelling at each other to change the configuration as we navigated the different loops.

After the little climb I was in about 20th place but I could see a large lead group of 10 people. I fought like mad from about 500m to 1 mile to close the gap to the leaders. I picked off a couple of people dropping off the pack and had almost made contact when I reached the mile (5:34) in 7th place. The mile mark was at a top of a long hill and I guess this was the point that the top guys decided they were going to break it open. The top three guys pulled away, but I still managed to move into 4th.

Two guys stayed with me until about mile 2 (11:04) but then I started to open a little gap. I thought I would have a shot at sub 17 but somehow the last mile was really slow. Turns out most of the people I was running against were teens, which makes for an intense race.

3rd straight intown 10k win. It was also my slowest of my three wins. I expected a bit more considering how well my recent workouts have gone.

Splits: 5:49, 5:45, 6:02, 6:17 (probably long), 5:59, 7:21

I ran alone the entire race. The 1st place women ran 38:04 and was the closest person to me. No one else broke 40mins. Previous years I had someone else to push me.

Two loops of Green Lake (AKA piranha bay).

Overall it was 33:12 for 5.6 miles (5:56) pace. Almost entirely flat so no adjustment needed.

It's 2.8 miles for one loop (16:37,16:35) and the trail is markerd every .25 miles.

This means that there's a combination of mile and .8 mile splits

5:55, 4:40 (.8), 6:02,5:56,5:57,4:42 (.8)

First ten mile tempo in seattle (actually 9.9, but I'm not sure that includes the 20 second stair climb). Started at Woodland Park, then ran to Green Lake, Ravenna, Burke Gilman Trial, Freemont Bridge, Westlake Trail to the Starbucks drive through at Lake Union Park (official finish line).

Total time of 61:38 (6:13 pace). Terrain is very flat and fast for the most part. There are a few downhills, but they are on gravel trails, as well as the aforementioned stair climb.

I took the following splits:

Start to Burke Gilman 4.76 in 29:49 (6:16 pace)

Burke Gilman 3.66 in 22:34 (6:10 pace)

Stairs+Bridge+Westlake: 1.47 in 9:14 (6:17 pace)

The bridge rises to allow ships to pass, and the barriers started coming down just after I had crossed, so I was fortunate that I didn't have to stop.In the future I'll need to leave earlier to ensure that I'm crossing the bridge prior to 9am (it was 9:10).

First race as a Seattleite. This race is part of the Magnuson park series which has monthly, no-frills, races.

The course was an interesting mix of gravel paths, concrete, trails and grass. It kind of reminded me of the sort of 'cross country' courses that I would run in highschool. At the start a guy in black (not Teren) took off real fast and probably ran su 16. I was in a pack of 2-3-4 and it remained a close battle for 2nd the whole way.

After the magnuson park 5k, my goal was to run the same pace for 8k today, which suprisingly I did. I ran much faster than I thought my workouts indicated.

Warmed up about 2.5 miles to the startline from home w/ Allie. There were a ton of club northwest peeps doing strides and drills as well as some other fastees. I was feeling good doing warmups, but I also wasn't putting a ton of pressure on myself.

I lined up in about the 3rd row and when the gun went off I made no attempt to move up. I just wanted to try to go with the flow. There was a huge lead pack of about 20 guys in front with a few stragglers off the back, then a gap back to what I would call the chase pack. Pretty quickly we passed over a (non-eponymous) bridge which did not really agree with my skechers.

For the first mile, my breathing was good and my stride felt fine, but there was some burning in my legs that I hoped would go away. The lead group wasn't very far ahead so I was concerned that I had started too fast, but I think they were all just biding their time. First mile in 5:27, but it was slightly downhill. I definitely didn't feel comfortable, but I had a group of 3 other people to run with so I just decided to stick with them as long as I could.

After the mile mark we started to run up a slight hill, I was sticking right on the should of the guy ahead of me and breathing pretty hard. He kept side-eyeing me like "who is this joker", and I felt pretty sure that I was going to fall apart at any moment. Then we crested the hill and I started to feel a little better and push the pace. 5:36 for mile 2, 11:03 for 2 miles. This would be a pretty good 5k split for me, so I just told myself to just make it one more mile. I knew I could make it one more mile.

Right after the 2mile mark we cross the eponymous bridge and went up another very slight, but fairly length climb. I got dropped again by the 3 guys in my group and had to surge to catch back up, then lost them again. It was getting tough. We passed up one of the early leaders who had fallen off the pace, but now they were dropping me. We mercifully hit a downhill and I reflected that I was more than halfway done. 5:40 split for mile 3, 16:43 through two miles, I figured anything sub 17 would be good before the race.

When we got onto Montlake, I just started to churn my legs. I knew that I was in for a good time as long as I kept pushing. I passed one more person who was dropping back and then started to see the leaders coming back on the other side of the street, so I knew the turnaround (which was about mile 4) couldn't be far. Came to almost a dead stop at the turnaround and had trouble getting moving again. Passed one more person. No 4 mile marker, though, so I was unsure of my pace.

The last mile weaves through the UW campus and I didn't have a good sense of how much I had left. I picked off a couple more people, but never caught back up to my original group of 3 who stayed about 6-7 seconds ahead for the last 2miles of the race. Last 1.971 miles in 10:59 (5:34) pace.

This race was very hard, meaning I probably got about as much out of myself as I could. I think if I knew the course better I could have closed harder in the last 800m or so. At the same time, not knowing the course probably stopped me from overthinking things and just pushing.

Very happy with this race. I don't run a ton of 8ks, so I put it into Daniel's calculator. The VDOT is 60.7, equivalent to a 16:52 5k and 35:00 10k, which would both be PRs. Slightly inferior to my 3K PR still.

Finish time is approximate for now.

Same course as the 5k a few weeks ago, so I felt pretty sure that I could beat my 15K PR (55:42 from 2014 SLCTC winter series). Course is somewhat challenging as there are many turns as well as gravel to contend with.

As I started out with the 5k runners, I got dragged along a little quickly to begin with: 5:45 first mile. After that I settled into a groove 5:53, 5:55, 5:55 for miles 2-4. My 5k split was aroung 18:10. Midway through the race I started to slip a little 6:01, 6:02 and then in the 7th mile I started hurting a lot on the steep climb: 6:08. When I saw that I knew I would have to refocus if I wanted a PR. Fortunately there was much more left in the tank 5:53 for mile 8 then 5:50 for mile 9. 5:33 pace for the final .321 miles.

Now the goal is to run this pace for the half marathon in two weeks (with some rest).

Although I broke 5k on the track last year, that was at an untimed all-comers meet.

I've had quite a few race performances that indicate sub 17 ability: the 17:23 in terrible conditions, my 35:16 10k, 27:42 8k, 9:34 3k, 17:05 at altitude. However, my workouts just haven't quite been there.

I resolved to go out hard in this race and hang on, which is not a very smart strategy but I though it would work for going sub 17 with my current fitness. I ran with Ari Schorr and Lance Thompson, two Club Northwest guys that said they were going to hit 5:15 for the mile. I was a little behind them at the mile and I got there in 5:13. I was really straining to stay with them as we had a nice group of about 4 but I just couldn't hack it. I just kind of died after that running 5:33 for mile 2 and then 5:35 for the last 1.107. Those splits aren't as bad they sound due to the terrain, but I definitely fell off the pace.

When I saw the clock at the finish line I strained real hard to get to the finish and I didn't think I had it until I saw the results just now. The finish of this race is about a 500-600m uphill into the sun (yikes).

After I was done I felt a little woozy, but still managed to cooldown with a few club northwest guys.

For anyone keeping score, that's 3 PRs in 3 races. It's especially encouraging that this race was run in far from ideal circumstances. I think that on the track, with fresh legs, I could take off a few more seconds.

That's 4 straight PRs! Given the difficulty of the course, I doubt I could have done much better.

Mile 1 6:20 (5:43 adjusted)

First mile had a ton of uphill. I knew that it would be slow ahead of time so I kept it pretty easy. Still, it ended up being faster than I needed. A ton of people around. I started running with someone in red singlet and a guy in a shirt that said "Elite runners and Sophie".

Mile 2 5:42 (6:01), 12:02 (1:18:42 projected finish)

In the second mile we lost pretty much all of the elevation gain from the first mile. Pretty steep downhill and I relaxed a ton. The two guys I was with took off, along with the lead woman. I ran with the 2nd and 3rd place women going down. This mile ended up being slower than I needed and I was behind goal pace.

Mile 3 5:56 (5:50), 17:58 (1:18:38)

I resolved to stay with the two women that I was with and so just followed them. We caught up to the 3 that had surged on the downhill. Another guy joined us and we formed a pack of 7 strong. I think we were places 9-16 in the half at that point. There were also two marathoners ahead of us.  At about mile 2.7 we took a hard right and hit about a 100m hill with about an 8% grade. That destroyed the pack, so I just stuck with the two lead women, now in spots 9-12.

Mile 4 6:03 (5:54), 24:01 (1:18:49)

The women slowed down ever so slightly, but I needed to speed up so I dropped them. Reach 5k in 18:37 in 9th place. I could see 8th place about ten seconds ahead. I could also see the 2nd place marathoner about 20 seconds up. Finally, the 6/7 place guys were about 30 seconds ahead. I couldn't see anyone else. This mile was one of my slowest miles and also the only one I ran alone.

Mile 5 5:55 (5:56) 29:56 (1:19:01)

I caught up to the 8th place guy (Simon Ong) just as I caught from behind by Allen OConnor. Both of these runners had crossed the start line after me so there were actually several seconds in front by chip time but I didn't know. I picked up the pace again, thanks largely to a flattening out of the course. My legs were starting to show the first signs of fatigue. This mile had the strongest headwind of the race.

Mile 6 5:56 (5:55) 35:52 (1:19:07)

Still running into the slight headwind. My legs were holding steady. I told myself that if I could make it through this mile I'd be over halfway, so fatigue was fine. At south lake union there was a machine setup that allowed you to give high fives to a bunch of diembodied hands. If you do then someone will donate some money to charity. Anyway, these things really hurt a ton. I would not recommend anyone doing that.

Mile 7 5:54 (5:37) 41:46 (1:18:37)

Now we turned back north again and had the wind at our backs. This had been my pre-determined point to surge and it worked out well. The 2nd place marathoner was coming back to us so I used him as a target. Hit 10k in 37:06 still leading a tight pack of 3. 7th place was only 15 seconds ahead at 10k, but had apparently also chosen that spot to surge as he started getting further away. 6th place was 45 seconds ahead. Top 5 were out of sight. This mile had the most significant climb since mile 1 and Allen surged by me. He clearly had the same idea about picking up the intensity. I tucked in behind for a few blocks and then took over again when we crested the hill.

Mile 8 5:51 (5:50) 47:37 (1:18:36)

Mile 8 was relatively flat and I picked up the pace again. We still had a slight tailwind. I knew that I needed to make these mile count due to the impending doom.

Mile 9 5:53 (5:56) 53:30 (1:18:45)

A switch back to another uphill and  slowed down a little. Allen again took the pace and I stayed right on him. I took over again as we crested yet another hill. I was hoping that this would be one of our fastest splits, but now we had a little headwind again. I was also dry heaving a little in this mile.

Mile 10 6:30 (5:53) 1:00:00 (1:18:46)

Legs very wobbly as I reached the bottom of the hill. Allen passed me again and for the first time gapped me. Hit 15k in 55:26, making for 5k splits of 18:37, 18:29, 18:15. When I saw this it pushed any negative thoughts out of my head. I knew I was behind goal pace but I definitely wasn't tanking. Big problem though, was that we had to climb one of the craziest hills I've ever seen in a major race. Starting off at about a 10-12% grade for 100m, it then kicked up to 20% for the next 100m. There were actually timing mats at the top and bottom to encourage people to race up it, but in typical RNR fashion it doesn't seem like they worked. At the base of the hill I was 6 seconds behind Allen and 7 seconds ahead of Simon. I climbed the hill so slowly that Simon closed the gap completely during those .1 miles. Despite climbing slowly my legs felt like garbage at the top. Somehow I managed to keep them moving and didn't lose any ground. I pushed hard to catch Allen and caught up to him again before the tenth mile.

Mile 11 5:52 (5:44) 1:05:52 (1:18:36)

After a bit of recovery I picked up the intensity again. Allen gave me some words of enouragement as I caught up and we started going back and forth again. I know the end of this course very well as its the same as the seattle half marathon which I have run many times in another life.

Mile 12 5:51 (5:33) 1:11:43 (1:18:15)

My best mile of the race. It climbs once again, but it's the last climb (basically). Allen came up along side and I pointed to the overpass peeking through the trees and said it was the top. I caught and passed the 7th place runner as we crested the last hill and just started to roll down to the finish.

Mile 13.1 6:33 (5:50) 1:18:16

The last mile was mostly down, but my legs were too trashed to take advantage. Allen surged and was gone. I just kept up the same pace, knowing that there was one final kicker. The last .3 was another climb, much harder than I anticipated. Simon once again passed me having crushed the final mile and I managed to stay on his shoulder to the finish. I also ended up losing to another guy in chip time so I was 10th overall.

Great race. I obviously need to work on my strength as I was not very aerobically challenged but my legs were dead when I was finished. So dead that I couldn't even cooldown. So I walked all the way home.

Unlike last week I had plenty of people to run with. My main focus was the mile, and I just didn't have the nerve to really push it. I could have closed a gap to the group ahead of me about 500m in, but I didn't really go for it.

For the 5k I was tired so I just tried to hold sub 17 pace as long as I could. That turned out to be about 4 laps.

Third magnuson park race. Lance Thompson and Spencer Walsh showed up as well as a few other club northwest people. There seemed to be quite a few folks running the 10k this time.

I started out really fast following the 5k runners. I was in 5th at the mile in 5:34. This mile felt suprisingly easy. During mile 2 I passed the 4th place guy (5:41). After that I had no one to run with. Tahoma and Spencer were in sight but too far ahead. I also started to feel the effects of (still) being a little sick. Remaining miles were 5:50, 5:56, 5:56, 6:00, and then 1:12 (5:36 pace).

PM After hiking up Mt pilchuk I ran 5.3 miles at 6:10 pace (downhill), to retrieve our car. Always check your parking brake.

Another 5000m PR, but just barely.

There were more people running this week and based on seed times it seemed like there would be a lot of people running around 17flat. It only took about 200m for a group of 6 to form. I hit 200m in 41 right on the heels of three runners from the tacoma city running club as well as Antonio Hernandez, who ran 17:03 two weeks ago (when I ran 17:14). There was another guy right on my shoulder with really long hair.

The lead guy from Tacoma was olympic trial qualifier greg leak and I think he was pacing the other two to 17flat.

The first 4 laps were great, maybe a little faster than I wanted.

81.7, 79.0,80.5, 80.4

We hit the mile at about 5:21, but then it stopped being easy. The 5th lap was only 81.7 and the tacoma city runners were starting to breath a lot harder. At 2000m I moved the front of the pack and started to set the pace more to my own liking. I figured that if I started to lose it then someone would pass me back. I ran 81.6 for the 6th lap.  I was starting to gain on the 2nd place guy (1st was long gone). However right as I caught him I heard some rapid breathing and a high school age runner passed by me. I only ran 82.0 for that lap then 81.5, 81.5 trying to stay with the new guy.  Mile 2 5:27.

With 3.5 laps to go I was really hurting and I still had 3-4 guys right on my heels. I let off the gas a little bit as I always seem to do in the 5k. 82.3 for lap 10 and 82.7 for lap 11. Picked it up again with a 81.0 for lap 12 and then 36.5 final 200m.

The final 5k of the season at the all comers meets (only 3ks from here on out) so I decided to run it fresh.

I had already run 16:52, 2 weeks ago which is 81 per lap. Based on my track workouts it was hard to envision that I was capable of much faster than that. I therefore decided that I would go out hard perhaps at a pace that I couldn't sustain, and then just try to hold on as best I could.

As this was the last 5k of the season quite a few people showed up including many, many highschoolers. Despite the presence of Max Randal and Tony Hernandez (who ran 9:37 and 9:53 to my 9:59 in the 3k last week), my 16:52 gave me the fastest seed time.

I'm beginning to realize that I don't like being seeded number one as I am not very quick off the line, so I get boxed in very easily. A huge crowd of 10-12 guys hit 200m together at about 38/39 with a couple of the highschoolers up front. I came through the first lap in 79.6 but I head '80'. Although it was PR pace, it wasn't as agressive as I wanted. As we approached 600m I moved to lane 3 and took the lead from the high schoolers. Max and Tony immediately followed and everything started to string out.

I was at 2:38.0 through 800m which is danger zone for me. However, my breathing was fine, especially compared to Max's. The next lap was even faster as I continued my surge: 3:55.5 at 1200m, which is really absurd. I could feel the lactic acid creeping into my legs but I just kept doubling down, trying to stick with the pace as long as I could. I was at 5:14.4 at 1600 and now Max was really getting antsy with the 79 second lap. He took the lead from me and Tony followed. I maintained contact for another lap but then started to fall back 6:34.2 at 2k. I slowed down dramatically in lap 6, and got passed by someone I don't know 7:55.9 at 2400m. Then lap 7 was slower still (83.1=17:19 pace), but 9:19.0 at 2800m meant I was still on PR pace. I hit 3k at almost exactly 10:00, so I knew that a PR was still possible. At 3200 (10:41) meters I moved back into 3rd and I could see that Max and Tony weren't that far ahead of me.

I really suffered the last mile of this race. I dropped another 83.1 on lap 9 (12:04.6), but I was only 3 seconds back from the leaders. At 4k (13:27.0) I finally caught back up to the leaders. I made a strong move with about 900m to go but it really wasn't that impressive (81.6 quarter). I was at 600m to go at 14:48.6 and I remember thinking I needed a 2:03 final 600m or better to PR, which seemed essentially impossible. Just then a high schooler came flying by me. I initially though that I was toast as he quickly put about 10m on me. However, by the time we hit the bell I could tell he was laboring. I passed him back with about 250m left and hit 4800m in 16:08.8. I kicked like mad (35.6) but barely held off Tony who was closing me down in the last 50m.

This was a really hard race. That said I think that a 16:10-16:20 5k is possible for me. I need to do a little bit more V02 max work. 3 year ago I would have thought a 16:44 5k was totally unrealistic (I was still running 17:30s).

Update: Results posted so it's official. I am old (well, not really).

I'm thinking about doing some XC races this fall so I went to Woodland park to scope out some good spots to do some training. Found a big loop around that is 1.75 miles that might be good for tempo run style workouts. Also found a 1000m loop with some wicked (but runnable) hills.

Decided to do some hill repeats on the big grass field. Allie and I decided to call this the marble hill for reasons that I have legit already forgotten.

Anyway I did 4 marble hills in 28.7, 27.1, 25.7, and 24.9. I will have to figure out how far that hill is. (136m, equivalent to 156m on a track).

AM 8.7 "1000" loop workout at Woodland Park. I say "1000" because the course is actually 890m, however it is very hilly. There is 110 feet of climbing and about 100feet of descent (start and end in different spots), meaning that on average there is an 8% grade either up or down. All of that means that the course tool say it is equivalent to about 990m flat.

I did 6 loops with 1 minute recovery.

Massive half marathon PR (67 seconds). I feel like this has been due for a couple of years, but I've always been running fairly slow courses.

Tons of fast people showed up to this race (The winning time was actually 1:01:01 with 2 more sub 1:05.) So the race got out fast. I was in roughly 25th place at the mile (in 5:40). I thought that maybe some of the people ahead would start dropping back, but it never really happened. I moved up to 24th at about mile 4, but it seemed like everyone else was getting further away.

I started to gain ground a little after the turnaround at mile 7, but it took me four more miles to actually catch up to anyone. I moved into 23rd right at mile 11, and then into 22nd right at mile 12. That mile was actually my slowest of the race. I started to feel my lack of miles at the end of this race, but when it felt like I was barely moving it was still 6 flat pace. I managed to drop the pace again when I saw the mile 12 marker, finishing with a 5:49.

5:40, 5:52, 5:50, 5:48, 5:56, 5:56, 5:54, 5:56, 5:54, 5:57, 5:59, 6:02, 5:49, 35

My plan for the fall is to do marathon type prep for the Seattle half marathon. It will be hard to beat this time at that course however.

Workout with Club Northwest.

Race simulation. Started with a 400m (I didn't time it, but probably in the 74-75 range).

Then 1k hard to simulate the start of a race: 3:12. Apparently I run a lot faster with other people around.

Then after 2.5 mins rest we did one loop around Green lake at 20-25 seconds slower than 5k race pace. I did 2.8 miles in 15:52 which is 5:40 pace.

Then after another 2.5 mins another km. I ran 3:14. It was a smaller group for the second km, because we spread out quite a bit over the course of the workout.

AM Run with Club NW. Ended up being a huge workout because I did a warmup and cooldown by myself as well as a warmup and cooldown with the club runners.

We started with a 'warmup 400' which seems to be the standard way these workouts start. I ran a 73 and actually ended up leading the quarter meaning I was probably trying harder than I should have been because I was running with a bunch of 4:10-4:20 milers...but whatevs.

Then we did a 22minute tempo run. I ended up running just shy of 4 miles (pace was 5:35 avg). It was hard at first, but I just got into a groove. Ran with Dylan Kent, Tahoma Doyon, Sheridan Grant, and Jay Navin in what the club calls "Group 2" but which should actually be called Group 3 as there is both a Group 1 and 1a.

Definitely held my own on the tempo, but then we did 6 by 1 minute hills. My lack of pure speed showed here and I was at the back of the group the whole time.

Really pleased with the tempo run as it was about 34:45 10k pace.

90+ miles and two workouts in my legs for this one so I was feeling pretty tired. Run with the same group but had a little bit of trouble keeping up this time.

Did a 74 second 400m 'warmup quarter'

Then 10 by 1k with 400m/2:30 rest. We ran on mixed terrain, on the dirt track, gravel path and asphalt. One small hill about 400m in.

3:22.5, 3:24.6, 3:21.8, 3:24.0, 3:24.2, 3:24.4, 3:24.8, 3:26.1, 3:28.1, 3:25.8

Then 4 xc repeats with the CNW guys.

1.13miles, 3mins jog, 1.13miles, 3mins jog, 1.33, 8 mins jog, 1.33

1.13mile loop had one big hill (piano hill actually). Did 6:17 and 6:16 (about 5:33 pace).

1.32 mile loop was flat for about .71 and then a 3% up grade for the last .62

I ran both reps in 8:24 (6:19 pace). The flat sections I ran in 4:09 (5:51 pace) and 4:13 (5:56 pace) the hilly sections were 6:51 and 6:44 pace.

Then I ran a long cooldown around Green Lake with Allie.

Adjusted course distance is 1.16 for the first loop (adj pace=5:24). Adjusted distance for second loop is 1.53 (adj pace=5:29)

Challenging, but not that of a couse challenging course. Ajusted pace came out to 18 seconds per mile faster than actual pace.

Course was 4 2k loops, with the first  k down and the second k up. Therefore, I alternated between 'fast' and 'slow' splits.

KMSplits: 3:28, 3:46, 3:33, 3:53, 3:36, 3:55, 3:36, 3:47

Despite slowing down I moved up a bit each loop. I struggled quite a lot on the uphills, which was also the case in the workout last week. Most of my workouts since being here have been on flat ground, after 4 years of running hilly terrain in Atlanta. I'm going to need to start mixing in a few more hills.

Race: Escalante Canyons Marathon (26.219 Miles) 03:02:03
Total Distance

Note on the course measurement/timing: Using the course tool, the course came out to 26.28, which I would normally consider to be close enough, but the stretch from 26 to 26.2 was clearly long (and could have been 0.28 given how long it took). Also my official time in the results is different from what I got on my watch. I know that they didn't start the race on time so that may have messed with things a little bit. Therefore my best guess is 3:02:04 for 26.28 (6:56 pace).

I had heard that there's a popular marathon in Southern Utah in October. It's got a few climbs but is a net downhill and some of the state's best runners show up. This year I finally gave in to peer pressure and signed up for the Escalante Canyon Marathon.

Although I am in the best shape I've been in since early 2012, I was not exactly marathon prepped for this race. I had done no workouts that would help get me through the last few miles. Therefore, knowing how much the race would beat me up, I wasn't sure about pushing it too hard and instead planned on cruising just fast enough to take second behind Jake.

That plan was not to be however as Gary Krugger, an experienced marathon who has run sub 3 in all 50 states, showed up. For perspective, at my last UT marathon (Ogden 2014) Gary ran 2:40 to my 2:58. I didn't know who Gary was until I looked him up just now, but it became clear over the first few miles of the race that I needed to take him seriously.

Mile 1 7:12 (Adjusted Pace=6:27, Projection=2:54:04)

Uphill mile to start. I ran with Devra and we were both breathing hard, I could really feel the altitude. Gary was about 10 seconds ahead and Jake was out of sight.

Mile 2 7:06, 14:18 (6:30, Projection=2:55:21)

After a mile I quickly decided that Gary posed too much of a threat to let him get away and that I should go catch him. I caught him during this mile and he didn't seem to be struggling, but rather conserving energy.

Mile 3 6:57, 21:16 (6:31, Projection=2:55:45)

I opened up some distance in this mile as we finally crested the hill. I could still barely see Jake in sight, but it would be the last time. I was disappointed seeing this split. At over 21 mins for 3 miles I felt it would be almost impossible to break 3hrs. So I decided to just forget about my overall time and just go by feel. The next few miles were all on a running on top of a narrow mesa that slope down gently. Off to the left and right were pretty spectacular views.

Mile 4 6:05, 27:20 (6:31, Projection=2:55:45)

Oh, right, of course, downhills make you faster. This concept has become foreign to me in the last couple of years. Still this mile was difficult as I was still feeling the elevation, even though it felt easy on my legs. I became concerned that I wasn't going to last very long at this pace, but this seemed to be how fast my legs wanted to run.

Mile 5 6:09, 33:29 (6:30, Projection=2:55:22)

Another fast mile down a gentle gradient and I started to think in terms of how far ahead of 7 minute pace I could get. I figured that I would need to be 8 mins ahead of 7 minute pace by mile 12 to get a sub 3.

Mile 6 6:05, 39:34 (6:25, Projection=2:53:32)

Yet another fast mile and my confidence was growing. Unfortunately, I could still hear Gary behind me so I knew that I had to keep pushing. At this point of the race, the Mesa narrow and you start to travel along the Hogback. This is a windy road along a ridge with steep dropoffs on either side, it is one of the craziest roads I've run on.

Mile 7 6:14, 45:48 (6:32, Projection=2:55:58)

The road started to go up and down more here and I lost a little rhythm, but I will still feeling good.

Mile 8 6:16, 52:04 (6:31, Projection=2:55:37)

The road started to go down more steeply here, punctuated with a few short climbs. I'm not used to downhill running so I kept my stride short to save my legs for later. Still I could feel my quads were starting to fatigue already. Fortunately, I knew that this super steep downhill woudn't last for very long. Gary seemed to have fewer qualms about the downhill and I could hear his footsteps getting closer to me.

Mile 9 6:14, 58:18 (6:42, Projection=2:59:05)

The first time I really fell off pace according to the course tool. This mile had some really steep decents and I just was trying to save my legs. Gary was now only 5-10 seconds behind me.

Mile 10 6:11, 1:04:29 (6:30, Projection=2:55:29)

I consciously picked up my downhill game here.

Mile 11 6:01, 1:10:30 (6:26, Projection=2:54:20)

Last mile of downhill and I was already starting to get sad about leaving it.

Mile 12 6:41, 1:17:11 (6:20, Projection=2:52:44)

Last bit of flat plus a climb towards the end. My effort went way up here and the adjusted pace reflects that. I was 6:49 ahead of 7 min pace, not enough. That meant that I would need to climb better.

Mile 13 9:19, 1:26:31 (6:52, Projection=3:00:49)

This mile was just brutal, an unrelenting 8-9% grade the whole way. It seemed like Gary was dropping back here and just hoping that I would blow up. As I hit the 13th mile, I knew that I would not be able to climb well enough to get a sub 3.

Mile 14 7:17, 1:33:48 (6:36, Projection=2:57:09)

First time I saw my support crew. They asked me how I was doing and I just said that this course is "Weird". Basically what I meant by that was that I had just burned myself up running a bunch of fast downhill miles, but that my splits weren't even that fast (64 mins through 10 miles) compared to a flat course. Basically, I was totally unprepared to run this type of race.

Mile 15 7:05, 1:40:53 (6:40, Projection=2:58:00)

I was starting to feel a little more positive here as I was getting closer to the top of the climb, and the last couple of splits had been a bit more reasonable.

Mile 16 8:57, 1:49:50 (6:48, Projection=2:59:35)

Another lousy mile, even accounting for the gradient. I looked down at the start of this mile down and could see Gary one switch back behind (about 90 seconds). I think I put quite a bit more distance on him during the rest of the climb.

Mile 17 7:42, 1:57:32 (6:51, Projection=3:00:06)

Crested the second of the two massive climbs during this mile. Couldn't immediately get going again. Now I was faced with the prospect of nine more mile to run, the actual hard miles of a marathon, with very little confidence in my fueling.

Mile 18 6:24, 2:03:56 (6:55, Projection=3:00:42)

Still feeling ok here, but not pushing all that hard. Thinking that I need to save something for the last 3-4 miles.

Mile 19 6:30, 2:10:26 (6:54, Projection=3:00:34)

Here I was thinking that maybe I could break three if the course didn't get too much more challenging.

Mile 20 6:47, 2:17:13 (7:00, Projection=3:01:28)

Still thinking maybe I can do it. Need to just run a little faster than 7 flat pace the rest of the way.

Mile 21 6:37, 2:23:50 (7:10, Projection=3:02:21)

Here Andrea jumped in and ran with me for a bit and I started to go a little faster, but it was mainly due to the course going downhill more.

Mile 22 7:06, 2:30:56 (6:59, Projection=3:01:16)

8 by TAIGA HILL. This hill ends by crossing over Aurora on a pedestrian bridge, which is flat. I try to surge across the bridge everytime. Today there were people holding political signs on the bridge that I sprinted by 8 times, they must have thought I was weird.

My preworkout plan was to cruise the first 6 reps and then hammer the final climb on the last two. Mostly worked out, but I started to get tired on #6.

Hill times in bold. I also included the rest which is just jogging the .25 miles or so down the hill, which will be interesting to track.

5 1.34 7:32 5:37
Total 7.02 40:59 5:50

That's 36:17 10k pace, which I doubt I'll beat on Sunday (hilly XC vs perfectly flat bike path/jogging path).

This workout felt fast, but did not feel particularly difficult. My main issues was a hotspot on my right foot that was rubbing everytimes I pushed off. It was perfect conditions weather wise.

I just looked back over my running log to see how fast I used to run these workouts before the apocalypse. Almost exactly ten years ago I did ten miles in 57:22 on the indoor track at the U, which is about 4700ft. I was using the 7.5 laps to a mile conversion, but I think that may actually be inaccurate. It may have been more like 9.8 miles. Still, not close to that form at the moment. And also about 8 years ago I split sub 57 en route to a half marathon on that track. Sheesh.

XC race at Woodland park: split into masters (combined), open women, and open men. As I was waiting for the masters race to start, some guy walking his dog asked if it was a high school race and he was suprised when I said it was adults. In most places adult XC is not really a thing, but among the fast runners in the area it's seems to be the most important thing. It's like the WA version of a half marathon down a canyon.

After my relatively poor showing in the 8k version of this course, I didn't have very high expectations. I set a tentative goal of just running the same pace as I did in the 8k but for an extra 2k loop, which would be just under 37.

The start of this race is down a really steep grass hill with poor footing and I was quickly close to the back of the race (there were 60 people). After about 500m we hit a nice downhill stretch and I caught up to Sheridan and Spencer. Hit the first 1k in 3:20 (downhill) and it felt pretty easy. I started to moveup as we climbed the hill back towards the start. 2k in 7:00.

On the second time down the steep hill I started to feel a little sick to my stomach which really kept me from pushing. After that I felt like I ran the rest of the race in cruise control. Spencer got away from me and Sheridan and I worked together. Someone in the back of my mind I knew that I could push a lot harder, but I was worried I was gonna vomit.

Sheridan and I picked off two guys and got passed by one over the final 4 loops but otherwise it stayed pretty much the same. It was a fun race, however, and I think that next year I will do more XC races. In fact, I have two more short ones that I'm going to do this winter.

AM 12.2 Bounce workout

I had high hopes for this workout as I feel like my basic speed has improved a ton in the last couple of weeks. Started off slow with a 5:38 1600. Then decided to lose the shirt and things got better from there. Capped off with a 2:35.7 800 and 73.8 400 neither of which felt like I was pushing too hard. Feeling pretty confident now about my upcoming 5k.

Idea for a race name in Mapleton: The Gobble Creep.

Anyway: goal for the race was to beat me bib# (1652) which I did just barely. I also logged my first sub 17 in a morning race (which tend to be slower than evening races.

I got out hard, staying on the shoulder of Nick Welch. He is a lot faster than me (2:29 at Chicago this year) so I thought maybe I was being overly aggressive to stay with him, but it felt just about doable. Every time he would threaten to put a little gap on me I would find a little surge and get back on his shoulder. A guy from Seattle Racing (turned out to be Joe Creighton who beat me by about 3 mins at the 10k last week) was in turn on my shoulder. 5:17 for the first mile, which was slightly disappointing given how fast it felt.

In the second mile there is a sharp left turn followed by a short climb and this was enough for the two better runners to drop me at about mile 1.9. Second mile in 5:33 meant that I was going to need to close well to get my 16:52.

In the last mile Joe pulled away, but I managed to close the gap back to Nick with about 800 to go and then I dropped him decisively (5:29 mile 3). I had a solid finish (31s) to just get my 16:50.

Turned out that Nick and Joe were running the 10k which explained why I was sticking with them.

The course was relatively fast, but they didn't close the trail to joggers which meant I had to expend some mental energy on not running into people making it slower than a track race. With that in mind, I didn't really feel like I was hurting at the end, which is positive.

Just easy miles. Wore my Kinvara 6, which started to feel a little more comfortable on my morning run. However, I think their lack of flexibility (relative to my Skechers GoRuns) makes them tire out my calves faster as it turns me into an even more aggressive forefoot striker. That means I'll have to hold off on wearing them anymore until after Sunday.

Finished this workout almost as fast as the 5k on Sunday, part of that is opening with a 5:55 mile as opposed to 5:17, but I think it also shows that 5k wasn't max effort like it would be on a track.

Did this workout in my GoMeb Speeds which I usually use for these types of runs. I wore them in the Labor Day Half and Pr'd but I felt like my calves were toast for the last 4-5 miles. Therefore I'm going to try doing a half in my GoMeb Razors, which I wore for the marathon and other long runs. I'm hoping that feeling better later in the race will make up for the extra weight.

Course was a bit more difficult than I anticipated, so I'm happy with the result. 2 seconds faster than seattle RNR and about 1 minute slower than labor day half (completely flat).

I started out in the 3rd pack for the first mile. My breathing was high but I guess I had a lot of adrenaline because I felt very relaxed. I briefly thought about trying to surge up to the second pack, but we hit a small hill just prior to the mile and it got a little harder. Reached the mile in 5:42 in a group of about 5 with another large group at 5:27 (I could hear a volunteer yell their split).

Almost immediately started to lose ground in mile 2. We turned on to the express lanes and we hit a slight climb that started to go on forever. Eventually I caught back up to couple of people who had dropped me. Missed mile 2 but mile 3 was about 17:45, meaning I had been over 6 minute pace for those two miles.

At mile 3 we went up another hill and emerged from the tunnel into the concrete canyon of I-5, which was a bit weird. Again missed my split for mile 4, but mile 5 was 29:26. This was my predetermined point to start pushing as the course suddenly gets easier. Unfortunately mile 6 was only 6:13, which seemed way wrong as it was almost entirely downhill and I had pulled away from everyone in the 3rd pack.

Then things got back on track with a 5:42 mile 7, so I figured that 6 was long and 7 was short. I could see one guy ahead of me and passed him up with a 5:50. But then it got hard to stay motivated, as I couldn't see anyone ahead of me. I just decided to cruise a little and save myself for the final 5k. 5:56, 5:58 for miles 9 and 10.

The race really starts at the 10 mile mark when you have to climb up Stone Way. Unfortunately, I had very little strength left in my legs. Managed a 6:35 for mile 11 going straight up hill. But the kicker is the climb just keeps going, it was probably 1.5 miles of uphill by the time I crested the Aurora bridge. When I did, I found it hard to get moving again and so only managed an 11:57 for the last two miles (which had some climbing but was a net downhill). 34 seconds for the finish.

I ended up almost 1 minute behind 10th and almost 2minutes behind 9th, although 12th and 13th were hot on my heels at the finish.

Weirdly, this race gives me more confidence in running a good marathon as I felt pretty relaxed knocking out those sub 6 minute miles in the middle of the race.

Afterwards I had enough energy to run back up Aurora to my house.

Return to the winter grand prix after a 10 year absence.

A tooooooooon of high schoolers were there, but most of the open runners were tuning up for club nationals next weekend so I was one of the few people up front over the age of 20. Race started fast and I was in a bit of oxygen debt but felt comfortable. Was in  about 10th at the first turn, but moved up to 3rd about .75 in.

Nick Dejarlais (who is not in HS, but a freshman in college) took 3rd back from me, but we had both lost a ton of ground to the leaders. At the mile the leaders were 5:06/7, Nick was 5:12 and I was 5:15.

Couldn't make up any ground on the second lap, but held of what sounded like a ton of HSers coming from behind. 5:15 for the second mile also. A great result for me, equivalent to 16:52 5k, 4:53 mile. I love this distance and I wish there were more races.

AM 2.9

PM Ran to Roosevelt highschool to run with the CNW tuesday night track workout. It was somewhat colder this week so I thought it might be wise to move my track workout from the morning to the evening.

Added bonus was that I got to run a track workout on an all-weather track instead of the dirt at greenlake and it made a huge difference.

Workout was 8x400m with 90-120seconds rest (I usually took about 100seconds).

The elite guys were there too and they always start with a "warmup quarter" so I jumped in with them and made that one my first rep. At the 200m mark I turned on the jets and suprised myself with a 71-72 for the first rep, given that all the other guys ran around a 76 I probably split something like a 33-34 for the second 200.

After that the workout started properly and it turned out that Mary Kate Anselmini (former Stanford runner with very similar PRs to me) was also there and doing the same workout, while most of the elits were doing a 20minute tempo (on the track). So we had some run sprinting past all of the fastest runners in the state together. We usually started out together running side by side until she would fall back a little in the last 150 except for the second to last one (for me) which was her last and she dusted me.

The splits were 71.0, 71.1, 71.3, 71.2, 71.7, 71.1, 70.2 for the remaining 7 which is just...I don't know, kind of a crazy workout. I felt in control the whole time. And in fact in the middle ones I told myself it was ok to back off the effort a little and I only slowed down by like half a second.

Before the last one I mentioned that I haven't run a sub 70 quarter in a workout since 2010 and the coaches told me not to force it and just think about form. I pushed a little hard and ended up with a 70.2.

AM Another not very good ship canal trail workout: 4.34 miles in 26:01 (6:00 per mile). It's not terrible but still about 17 seconds per mile slower than last time I attempted this. However, these workouts have been highly variable this year so I'm not going to read anything into it.

Started out right on pace but started to slow at about the 10 minute mark. Sore neck shoulders=low BP? Legs also felt like they lacked power.

Cross country this time, with a big hill that we have to run-up twice. Most people are about 15-20 seconds slower than the road 2-mile. I was 30 seconds slower.

Part of it was being a little bit more tired this week as I've increased my mileage again, but I also didn't get out hard enough. I was probably in about 60th-70th place at 200m and then had to fight my way past people. I will get another shot at this race in a few weeks.

Split 5:41 at the mile in 20th-30th place.

Afterwards ran home 7.5 miles on the Burke-Gilman and I could feel how tired my legs were.

You had to run up the same hill twice? That could be annoying on a 1.93 mile course because you could be lapping people.

Did the warmup quarter in 73, I did not win this time.

The workout called for me to start at 6:00 pace and speed up ten seconds every mile. I went out too fast trying to stick with Lance Thompson. I fell off pace in the 3rd mile and left something in reserve so that I would be able to close hard the final mile.

Afterwards did 6 by 150m strides. Speed is gradually improving.

AM 16 including 8 miles tempo with CNW.

There's a big drop-off in turnout to club workouts after club xc it seems.

The workout for group 1/1a was 7 miles at 5:50 to 6 flat follow by 1 mile at 5:30. Although, I know that's a workout I can do I was worried that 1) The fast guys would all decide to run faster because they definitely can and 2)My recent tempo runs haven't been as good recently. Therefore I decided to drop down to the 2/2a workout which was 6:12-6:15 followed by 5:50.

The thing is everyone else in my group decided to do 6 tempo and 1 hard. This ended up working out perfectly for me as I did 6+1+1. It ended up being a progression run going from 6:20 to 6:10 the first 6. Then I ran a 5:35 with the group as they all finished, but I kept rolling. I then ran a 5:37 by myself with a 180degree turn, which everyone assured me was really more like a 5:34 without the turn around. Ended up being 49:04 for 8.1 (6:03 pace). Didn't feel very hard.

At midnight I drove to downtown seattle to run with some college friends on the empty streets.

A few hours later I did my annual time 5k time trial at middle school track. This time trail never seems to be very fast. I think the track may be too soft. Conditions were fine this year, a little cold but I still ran in shorts.
