Been feeling really terrible this week. Did  7*(1min on - 2min off) in an attempt to get my legs moving. Felt ok. Fortunately, there was a math problem embedded in the workout.

1st loop of liberty park contained 4 minutes of fast running and 6 minutes of slow running.

2nd loop of liberty park contained 3 minutes of fast running and 7:27 of slow running.

A loop of liberty park on the wood chips is 1.46 miles.

Assuming that my fast and slow running speed stayed constant throughout the workout, what were those speeds (in mins/mile)?

Assuming 6:00 is fast and working from there, I got 7:30 for the slow. Sorry I have no equation to back it up bit I think the math works...

From allie on Fri, May 10, 2013 at 15:49:46 from 97.126.223.200

for k = 1 ... m: Find pivot for column k: i_max := argmax (i = k ... m, abs(A[i, k])) if A[i_max, k] = 0 error "Matrix is singular!" swap rows(k, i_max)Do for all rows below pivot: for i = k + 1 ... m: Do for all remaining elements in current row: for j = k + 1 ... n: A[i, j] := A[i, j] - A[k, j] * (A[i, k] / A[k, k]) Fill lower triangular matrix with zeros: A[i, k] := 0

Allie is correct! Assuming you can provide the correct A[i,j], an implementation of the algorithm and an interpretation of its result.

Josh, close but wrong.

Holy schnikes! Well they say that lawyers suck at math.

From fiddy on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 11:47:54 from 97.126.223.200

Just to be clear, the answer doesn't require complicated math.

From allie on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 11:56:29 from 97.126.223.200

i disagree.

From ACorn on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 17:12:44 from 71.213.40.95

Roughly 8:05 for the slow and 5:34 for the fast.

From Bonnie on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 17:39:07 from 64.119.33.134

Ha ha ha ... The best thing about allie's approach is that is a general solution that is not dependent on your particular workout. However, I am not sure that her approach adjusts for the variability that might be present --- might I suggest incorporating a little error variance, by way of a m by m variance-covariance matrix, V? Maybe start with a little auto-correlation?

From allie on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 17:47:25 from 97.126.223.200

hahaha. bonnie, i have been waiting for you to arrive. you are my "phone-a-friend" for this problem.

From runningafterbabies on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 19:06:56 from 208.54.4.180

My guess is faster than Tinker Bell but slower than Jake from the Neverland Pirates. That's what my 4 year old says. Next time borrow that sweet Garmin you gifted Jake.

From fiddy on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 19:59:13 from 97.126.223.200

ACorn is correct.

Melody may also be correct.

Bonnie, I think that would overfit the data.

From ACorn on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 20:11:19 from 71.213.40.95

Thanks for the problem, I enjoy brushing up on my math!

From Bonnie on Sat, May 11, 2013 at 20:53:39 from 196.3.39.209

Nice!!! While I think you might have enough observations, I think it might be possible that the model might be non-identifiable.
