Felt ok.

You’re in a room with four holes, and through each hole is a button. Each time you press the button, it toggles between on and off, but you don’t know what it is to begin with and can’t tell the difference when you press the button. You have two hands, so you stick them through any two holes you choose, then either press the buttons or not. After you press the buttons, they spin around a random number of quarter turns. You can then do it again, but you don’t know whether you’re pressing the same or different buttons as last time. You’ll be free from the room when all four buttons are on or all four are off. How can you escape the room with 100% accuracy in finite time?

Saw you guys out there running while driving by. Good run!

There are 5 combos. 4 on, 4 off, 2 on/off, 3 on/1 off, 3 off/1 on.

Does the room open automatically when 4 are on or 4 or off? If so, every time you hit two buttons there is a 2/5 chance you will end up with 4 on and 4 off. So I think after 15 tries there is a 99.95% chance you will have ended up with 4 on or 4 off. I think that is close to 100%. =1-(3/5)^15

I could be off because I don't know how you could know with 100% certainty that 4 are on or 4 are off, unless the door opens automatically.

Forgive my ignorance as my background in math is kind of weak. I suppose this is a statistics probability question?

Might sound like a dumb question I know but I never attained enough math skills other than what was necessary to solve basic electronic calculations.

Fritz, yes it opens automatically. However, I'm looking for a method that gets you out EVERY time.

Steve, no math is required to solve this problem.
