One hundred of the world's greatest logicians are stuck on an island. They are all either wearing a red hat or a blue hat. There are no mirrors on the island and the logicians are rendered unable to remove their hats, speak or communicate in anyway, presumably by the same authority that placed them on the island and gave them hats in the first place. The logicians will be free if they can figure out what color their hats are. Everyday at noon, the logicians gather into a circle, anyone who has figured out the color of his hat must announce the fact. If they are correct, they go free otherwise they are shot. A logician will therefore only announce the color of their hat WHEN THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE.

They know there is at least one hat of each color.

All the logicians can escape the island alive. How?

As they are on an island, each of them could look into the water that surrounds the island, see their reflections, and then 'know' the colour of their respective hats. Now, enlightened, they could announce the colour of their hats.

Alternatively, they could build a boat and sail away.

1 blue or red/99 blue or red. The single logician has to start because he sees everybody else and knows he's the only one of that color. After, all the others will know that they are the opposite color. (Mom helped me on that one :)
